source: Pew Research Center pdf report
posted: Feb. 12, 2008
"If current trends continue, the population of the United States will rise to 438 million in 2050, from 296 million in 2005, and 82% of the increase will be
due to immigrants arriving from 2005 to 2050 and their U.S.-born descendants, according to new projections developed by the Pew Research Center."

Commentary on U.S. Latino Population Soaring
by Ricardo González
These are huge numbers. The data is compelling.
Here are few more quotes from the Pew Research Report:
"The Latino population, already the nation’s largest minority group, will
triple in size and will account for most of the nation’s population growth
from 2005 through 2050. Hispanics will make up 29% of the U.S.
population in 2050, compared with 14% in 2005."
"The non-Hispanic white population will increase more slowly than other
racial and ethnic groups; whites will become a minority (47%) by 2050."
"Of the 117 million people added to the population during this period due to the
effect of new immigration, 67 million will be the immigrants themselves, 47
million will be their children and 3 million will be their grandchildren."
I encourage you to download the report and read it. Here are a few practical suggestions based on the report:
1. You should learn to communicate well in Spanish if you presently do not. You are not going to get away from these numbers. They are real. Hispanics will be 29% of the entire population of this country by 2050.
2. You should commit to raising bi-lingual children. They will need to speak both Spanish and English to effectively compete in the job market.
And yes, I do believe all Latinos in this country should learn English. Simply put, this report is not targeted to them.
3. If you are a businessperson, you should make learning about the Latino culture a serious endeavor. This is why I provide this Report to you. I want to make it easy for you to stay up on things. I sincerely believe that this is very important for you.
I would also encourage those of us who are Latinos to not use this type of data to "stick it in the face" of Anglos as sometimes happens. We must be mindful of the heritage and traditions of this country if we are to achieve true and long-lasting harmony together.
As a footnote, as a country, we need to do all we can to strengthen our infrastructure. There will be a 48% increase in population in the United States in the next 45 years. That's a lot more people and if we do not strengthen our infrastructure we will have even more serious problems on our hands than we presently do.
Again, I encourage you to download this report and study it. There is a lot of important information here. I have simply tried to highlight a few of the most important matters relating to the Latino populace.
Adelante,

Ricardo González
