Commentary on Political Caution with Latinos
by Ricardo González

This article speaks volumes.

The one word that can be applied to ALL major candidates is hypocrisy as it relates to the Hispanic populace and the issue of immigration.

This issue has been made very complicated by demagogues on both sides of the political spectrum. No surprise here. Politicians are good at creating confusion in order to divide and conquer. Here, however, is the truth. We are a country of law and we are also a capitalist country. This is where the tension is created.

Businesspeople want to grow their businesses. To do so they need good labor and they need people who can communicate with the largest number of people possible. This need is for both domestic and international business. The issue is not only labor my friend. The issue is also bilingual professionals who can serve a greater number of people. Remember, we do live in the Western Hemisphere and as Latin American economies grow, or as the Latino economy in the United States grows, American companies want to be there.

As long as the majority of Anglos in this country continue to buy into the monolingual myth of supremacy Latinos will continue to take their jobs for purely pragmatic reasons. This has nothing to do with politics or law. This has everything to do with business and the bottom line. Let's stop kidding ourselves here. This is not minority pandering. This is business survival.

Unfortunately, our candidates do not want to touch a hot iron. They want the votes they believe can swing an election in several closely contested states, but they don't want to tell the truth.

When the time is right I will present you with an immigrations plan that would, in fact, allow the law to work and at the same time, allow our economy to prosper. To date, no politician has given a viable alternative to our present-day chaos.

Adelante,

Ricardo González
